Residential Projects

Our gardens are recognized for grace, material richness and a respect for natural conditions, and range in size from small city gardens to large estates. Much of our work, not immediately obvious to the eye, addresses site problems such as grading, drainage, tree preservation, soil stabilization and erosion control.

7001 Crail Drive
Bethesda, MD

To complement this modern house by architect Charles Moore, the new terracaes were designed as cantilevered platforms that anchor the house and hover over the landscape. The broad terraces, walls, and steps are uniformly paved in dark slate and create a strong visual foundation for the house. Additional details include stainless steel cable railing and specialty lighting.

Washington, DC

Indiana limestone steps climb thirty feet to the front door of this Victorian house, which sits high above MacArthur Boulevard. The steps and adjacent gardens are accented with metalwork and wooden fencing, designed to complement the historic house. The master plan for the property included a pool and pool house, carriage house and formal gardens.

Chartwell Manor Court
Potomac, MD

By cutting into a sloping embankment, two terraces were created in a previously unusable rear yard. The configuration of the brick walls create a bold geometric pattern that is accentuated by the landscaping, which also screens adjacent neighbors. Broad lawns reinforce the horizontality of the terraces and contribute to the simplicity of the design.

Gardens and terraces were designed to encircle the house and extend into the natural landscape, providing a transition between the interiors and the woodland setting. The plan included a garden entrance to replace a circular driveway, several terraces supported by large retaining walls, an ornamental wall surrounding a formal garden, and several fountains.
