Roof Gardens

Our roof gardens not only dramatically transform underutilized space, they provide environmental benefits by reducing storm water runoff and heat absorption on the roof. The constraints of designing a roof garden are unique and we work closely with consultants and clients to define critical issues such as structural limitations, waterproofing and drainage.

This garden, on the roof of an historic building, has panoramic views of the US Capitol. Influenced by the roof gardens at Rockefeller Center in New York City, the garden has a large, central lawn surrounded by planters designed to reflect the classical moderne style of the building. Structural limitations required that planter walls, steps and soil be extremely lightweight.

Two terraces were designed on the 10th floor
as garden backdrops to adjacent reception and conference rooms. The largest terrace stretches along Eye Street and has views to the Washington Monument. The second terrace, along the rear of the building, provides a lush contrast to the proximity of surrounding buildings. Weight restrictions required all materials to be rightweight. Client: O'Melveny & Myers.

To diminish the harshness of the brick walls and to subdivide the space, fiberglass panels were used to create walls of translucency and contrast in this courtyard, which is located above a parking garage. The design uses linear planters of varying heights to create a layered effect, and a black metal trellis along one edge of the courtyard provides privacy and heightens the garden's modern design.

Carleton Condominium

The landscape renovation of this high-rise condominium included the central courtyard, above the parking garage, which was redesigned to create a visual centerpiece. The design centrally consolidated several walkways, thereby maximizing landscaping on the edges of the courtyard where visual screening was required.
